“How do I correctly highlight and contour my face shape? With 24 years in the beauty industry, it’s a question I often get asked. And, as you may have guessed, the answer isn’t a one-size-fits-all, here.

Each face shape can visually change by adding the right mix of blush, highlighter, and contour to the right places.

It’s time to Glow With Confidence!

To achieve your desired effect when using a highlight and contour, a light hand and quality brushes will allow you to blend seamlessly, amplifying your natural beauty, even for the makeup beginner!

I’m assuming, none of us want to create the clown effect, with rose-red dots in the front and center!

Nor do we typically wish to recreate the “ultra-strobed” look that’s way too obvious for a special occasion, not to mention, overdone and unprofessional in the workspace.

I’ve learned by simply combining your right cheek color, with some simple highlight and contour techniques, you can define specific areas while still achieving an overall sculpted, yet natural appearance.  Thank goodness! It really isn’t just for Hollywood anymore!

Highlight and Contour adds dimension to your look with 5 Easy Steps

1. Identify Your Face Shape

Whether you are defining your face with liquids such as concealers and foundations or with powders, the only change when applying highlight and contour is in the placement, which is of course, based on your face shape.

Strategic placement can cause the entire face to appear longer, shorter, or wider. The angle at which the line is placed can round, sculpt or add angles and define, creating a lifted or sunken appearance to that feature.

2. Blush/Cheek Color

Begin to amplify your natural beauty with products that have light-reflecting pigments and pure color. First, I choose a shade of blush that is similar to your natural blushing skin tone.

When applying blush, the goal is to achieve an even finish, not a concentrated area of color that can look too severe, striped, or unnatural. After applying your finishing powder, I start blush application on the apples of the cheeks (the fullest part of the cheeks when you smile), extends along the front of the cheekbones, and up toward the hairline. Then, blend for a fresh, beautiful touch of color. To blend and soften edges, first, remove any remaining color on the brush by dusting it across a dark cloth or paper towel.

And finally, with a light hand, do small circular motions at the same angle the color was applied. Of course, based on your face shape or desired illusion, the angle can be changed for preferred look.

3. Contour

Contour can be used to create an all-over glow for a lit-from-within warmth. Easy contouring comes via a light or dark matte tones that blend with the skin for seamless shadowing.

Matte contour colors will appear to sculpt and mold your features.  It naturally causes the area where it is applied, to visually recede, or push back.  The powder formula that I use in the video, provides pure powder color that stays true all day, from work to workouts and beyond.

I pick up contour onto my cheek powder brush. After squeezing the bristles between your thumb and hand, gently sweep below cheekbones, to create that hollowed effect. I also like to place the color along the side of the nose to thin and create more definition. I love that contour can also help widen a long narrow face by placing a long stripe along the hairline of the forehead, or to temples and jawline to thin, and even add angles to a round or square face.

4. Highlight

The beauty of a highlighter is it’s like adding perfect lighting to your face. It gives your complexion a boost of luminosity, visually raising and drawing emphasis to that area. However, for the person who wants to lift and accent an area without luminosity, a matte powder or liquid concealer in a lighter shade can be used to “lift”.

To Apply:

I lightly sweep highlight powder on top of cheekbones to give a subtle, “lifted” appearance to cheeks where light typically touches the face. So, for a round or square-shaped face, I sweep highlighter in the center of the forehead, the tip of your chin, and atop your cheekbones at the same angle as your contour and blending slightly into cheek color. With a long oval shape face, brush highlighter over the middle of your forehead, the tops of your cheeks and under your lower lip to visually widen and shorten its appearance.

And finally,

5. BLEND!

Using a large, feathery powder brush, very lightly create sweeping, circular motions to soften any highlight and contour edges.  If you prefer to create your dimension using cream concealers or foundation, a blending sponge and liquid foundation brush will help create that seamless glow.

And, Voila!  Your finished masterpiece is complete in just minutes!

You’ve created a drama-free highlight and contour experience for you when it comes to creating your desired look. By simply adding this into your daily practice will quickly make your contour confidence soar.
